Holiday Season Preparation

Hosting a holiday celebration? Here are a few things you can do to prepare your septic system before guests are coming over:

  1. Preventative Maintenance. Preventing sewer backups during times of high use starts with proper maintenance. The Holiday Season is the perfect time to have your tank cleaned & serviced by a reputable local service provider. Calling for service prior to guests showing up will ensure you have a cleaned and functioning system, helping avoid a holiday disaster.

  2. Spread out water usage. Increasing the amount of time between washing dishes, doing laundry, or other high water use chores can help your system's drainfield from becoming overloaded.

  3. Educate guests. If you're having guests stay overnight or for an extended period, make sure to inform them of what is expected when they use the facilities in your home. Excessively long showers, overuse of toilet tissue, leaving water running, flushing trash, grease or other items down the drain, etc. can all result in an overloaded system, potentially ruining a special family gathering.

  4. Septic-Safe. Make sure you are using Septic-Safe products, such as toilet tissue, laundry soaps and dish or hand soaps. Make sure there are no items that shouldn't be flushed near toilets, sinks or showers. Small children sometimes have a knack for that sort of thing.

  5. Securing the septic system. Make sure that any access lids or inspection ports are properly secured shut to avoid a potential catastrophe. Though the weather may not be warm outside, we certainly want to make sure that no accidents from falling in a tank can happen.

As you're getting ready for the holiday season, make sure your septic system is in proper condition. Preventative Maintenance can do just that- prevent any unwanted septic problems from occurring while everyone is enjoying the season, good food, family and friends.

We hope you have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!
